How to remain inspired by using the Law of Goldilocks
Just pretend that you’re playing tennis. You’re going to get bored easily if you decide to play a serious match against a four-year-old. It’s just too easy a sport. If you decide to play a serious match against a professional tennis player like Roger Federer or Serena Williams, on the other end of the continuum, you will find yourself demotivated for another cause. Human beings enjoy obstacles, but only if they are within the optimum difficulty zone. There are repetitive jobs that are significantly beyond the existing capabilities. Tasks that are greatly beyond your present ability are discouraging. Yet our human minds are extremely inspired by behaviors that are right on the border between success and failure. We want nothing more than a talent far beyond our present horizon to master it.
We might call this phenomenon The Law of Goldilocks. The Goldilocks Rule notes that when performing on projects that are right on the verge of their present capacity, people feel optimum inspiration. It’s not that tough. Not too easy, though. About yeah. Right, right.
One of the secrets to retaining long-term motivation is to work on duties that lead to the Goldilocks Law. It is mostly that it has drifted into an environment of stagnation or been shoved into an area of considerable complexity if you find yourself unmotivated to work on a mission. You ought to find a way to get your responsibilities back to the boundaries of your ability, where you feel overwhelmed, but willing to do so.
